Interview with Guardians of Time!

In early August, I was browsing the Swedish website Rocknytt (www.rocknytt.net), and checked out the latest album reviews. And since I’m Swedish, I have a penchant for power-metal. So I noticed the name “Guardians of Time”. It sounded so much power-metal, and maybe not in a good way… It sounded a lot like fantasy, and a bit geeky really

Anyway, I read the review (in Swedish), and I got really interested of the band. So I went to Spotify, and found all of the bands albums, and I started with their latest album “Rage and Fire”, the album that got reviewd.

I thought it sounded pretty good, and I got more curious about the band and the music, so for better or worse, I sent the band an email and asked if I could get an interview with the band.

At that moment, the band were on a tour in Europe, but I still got the answer that: OF COURSE! We just have to finish the tour, and then we’ll answer all of your questions!

All said and done, I cooked up some questions to the band, and here it goes! Here’s the interview!

Hello Guardians of Time! Is this Paul I’m talking to? If now, to whom do I have the pleasure to talk to? What’s up?

“Hi! Paul here!”

Could you give a short presentations of the band, who you are and where you’re from?

“Bernt – vocals
Jonkis – bass guitar
Andreas – guitar
Geir Øivind – drums
My self – also guitar

And we are Guardians of Time from Norway!

I’ve only had time to listen to your latest album, and according to me you play a pretty powerful power-metal with a hint of progressive metal. But that just my opinion… How would you like to describe your music? And what are your influences?

“We are primarily a heavy metal band! But I guess we have a lot of power in the music, and a bit of prog as well. We’ve got our inspiration from all the classic metal bands that we grew up with, like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Helloween, Gamma Ray and so on.

You’ve actually had this band for quite some time now, thought I saw the year 1997 on you website; and you’ve only released four albums. What was that happened between album number two and three?

“Well the band the band dissolved when two of our members started families and got other priorities. After about 4-5 years, me and Bernt decided to find some new members and started the band again.”

So now you’re back in the game! Your latest album, “Rage and Fire” is a really powerful album that suits me really well! And when I’m writing this, you are on a tour and currently in Serbia. It seems that you are rather big in eastern Europe. Why is that you think?

“Well, we’re starting to get a fan base in eastern Europe, that’s right. It’s where we’ve done the most of our touring, so it’s quite natural I think. But since the first time we got there, they welcomed us with open arms. There’s a lot of metal-fans there, and they attend concerts and really supports the bands that plays there. There’s not every country where you see that, so eager to show their support.

When you talk about Norway and metal-music, it’s natural to talk about black-metal. But that’s pretty much it. How is the metal-scene in Norway, really?

“There are many good bands, in different genres really in Norway, but as you say, black metal’s got the most attention. The fact that we play without make-up is often a big surprise to our fans in eastern Europe! J

Speaking of your tour, I don’t see any shows in Sweden! Me, I think that it’s fun with bands from our neigbour-countries (but I’m half Norwegian…), especially when it’s as good music as you guys do!

How come that Norwegian Rock and “ordinary heavy metal” doesn’t find its way to Sweden you think?

“Not a clue! Maybe because there is so many really good Swedish metal bands and you guys don’t need any Norwegian bands, hahaha! We do have Dimmu Borgir, Turbonegro and TNT, but we’re not near your Swedish producers! You rock!”

What are your plans for the year 2016?

“Hopefully a new album and a new tour. So maybe then we will come to Sweden, hehe!”

How was it now, is it the bass-player or the drummer that’s always the clown of the band?

“In Guardians of Time there are 5 clowns!”

What about the metal-scene in Europe today? How does it feel?

“Don’t think that metal will be as big as it was in the 80s, but there is metal-fans all over the place, and as long there are metal-fans there will be metal-music! The metal-scene is alive and kicking!”

So, what music do you listen to in your car?

“Well, right now it’s Black Sabbath!”

I have to return to that black-metal heritage in Norway. Is that something you listen to? Is that all the metal that exists in Norway (besides Guardians of Time, and Pagan’s mind maybe)?

“All metal-heads has a relation to black-metal, and most of them are fans to the music in some way. I like bands like Immortal, Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir. But there is a lot of other music that is good! Green Carnation, In the Woods, Gothminister, Sirenia, Circus Maximus, Susperia and many more.”

How do you fell about the metal-scene in Sweden?

“According to me, Sweden might have the best metal scene in the world! Amazingly many great bands!”

You say that there are a lot of good Norwegian metal bands in different genres. Except for Guardians of Time, what other Norwegian band do you listen to?

“TNT, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Kvelertak”

Since there are so few “regular” Norwegian metal-bands that come to Sweden and plays, have you ever thought that you could team up with some other Norwegian bands for like a mini-tour in Sweden (and maybe the rest of Scandinavia as well)?

“Yeah, that would kick ass! A gig at Sweden Rock Festival is kind of a wet dream!”

So you have plans for a new album and a new tour, already in 2016!? You’ve working hard! Have you started to work on a new album already? How’s that working, how far have you come?

“Got a couple of songs ready….” J

Who does the writing of your songs? Where do you find your inspiration?

“More or less everyone in the band contributes with riffs and themes, but the music is pretty much Bernt’s doing. Bernt also does the lyrics.”

Recently, I did an interview with the Swedish band “Sator” (not published yet), and they said that, there aren’t any Swedish rock bands that are able to live solely on their own music. How’s that working for you? Are you able to be musicians full time?

“No. But if we recycle a lot of empty bottles, we’ll get by! J”

As I stated earlier, I’ve only had the time to listen to your latest album “Rage and Fire”. What album do you recommend that I listen to next, just to get the best opinion of the sound of Guardians of Time? And please, don’t say “All of them!” J

“Well, when you get tired of “Rage and Fire” (which is impossible to get tired of!), the you should try “Machines of Metal Design”. And after that…. ALL OF THEM!!” J

You said earlier that when you play in eastern Europe, you get a tremendous support from the fans. How is when you play in other places? I know for example, that it’s very hard to get a Swedish crowd going. Why is that you think? Is it just cultural, or are we Scandinavians just spoiled with really good bands?

“I believe that Swedish and Norwegian band generally have a higher level compared with the most countries. If you want the audience to go wild, you just have to give 100% all of the time! The audience feel the energy and it rubs on to them. I’ve never played in Sweden, but we northen men are a bit repressed by nature, and need a bit more warming up than people in other countries.

In eastern Europe, the fans are very dedicated, go to concerts, buy merchandise and support the bands that are playing. At least we in Norway have something to learn from that. And they drink a lot of Rakija over there… It’s really hazardous!!!”

And then, five quick ones:

“Rock hard and stay metal!”

Den svensk/norska versionen av intervjun!

I början av augusti satt jag och surfade på den svenska siten Rocknytt (www.rocknytt.net) , och kollade de senaste album recensionerna. Och svensk som jag är, jag har ju en förkärlek till power-metal, så fastnade jag för namnet ”Guardians of Time”. Det lät så mycket power-metal, och kanske inte riktigt på ett bra sätt…. Det lät väldigt mycket fantasy egentligen, och lite töntigt.

Anyway, jag läste recensionen och blev väldigt nyfiken på bandet. Så jag kollade på Spotify, och där fanns alla album med bandet, och jag började med ”Rage and Fire”, det album som blev recenserat.

Jag tyckte att det lät så pass bra att jag blev intresserad av både musiken och bandet, så på vinst och förlust så skickade jag ett mail till bandet och frågade om jag kunde få ställa några frågor till dem.

Just då så var bandet på en liten Europaturné, men jag fick ändå svaret att, SJÄLVKLART! Ska bara avsluta turnén först, sen svarar vi på alla frågor!

Sagt och gjort, jag svarvade ihop lite frågor till bandet, och här är intervjun!

Hallå Guardians of Time! Är det Paul som svarar på frågorna?  Om inte, vem har jag äran att få fråga ut? Hur är läget?

”Heisan! Paul her!”

Kan du presentera bandet lite, vilka ni är och var ni kommer ifrån?

”Bernt – vokal

Vi er Guardians of Time fra Norge!”

Jag har bara hunnit lyssna på ert senaste album, och jag tycker att ni spelar en ganska kraft-full power-metal med lite inslag progresiv metal. Men det är bara min uppfattning… Hur skulle du vilja beskriva er musik? Och vilka är era influenser?

”Vi er først og fremst et heavy metal band! Men vi har nok mye power i musikken og litt prog også. Vi er inspirert av band som Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Helloween, Gamma Ray, osv. Alle de klassiske metal bandende som vi vokste opp med.”

Ni har ju faktiskt varit ett band ganska länge nu, sedan 1997 tyckte jag att det stod på er hemsida; och ni har bara släppt fyra skivor. Vad var det som hände mellan skiva två och skiva tre?

”Bandet ble oppløst da to i bandet fikk familie og andre prioriteringer. Etter 4-5 år bestemte jeg og Bernt oss for å finne nye folk og starte opp igjen.”

Men nu är ni igång igen! Er senaste skiva “Rage and Fire” är ett riktigt kraftfullt album som passar mig väldigt bra! Och när jag skriver det här är ni i Serbien och spelar. Det verkar som att ni är ganska stora i Östeuropa, eller har jag fel? Och hur kommer det sig?

”Vi begynner å få en fanbase i Øst Europa, ja. Det er der vi har turnert mest, så det er naturlig. Det er litt tilfeldig at det har blitt øst europa, men siden første gang vi var der har vi blitt tatt i mot med åpne armer. Det finnes mange metal fans der og de går på konserter og støtter opp om bandene de liker. Det er ikke alle land hvor folk er like flinke til å vise sin støtte.”

När man pratar om Norge och metal så blir det naturligt en massa prat om alla black-metal band, men aldrig något om annat egentligen. Hur ser metal-scenen ut i Norge idag egentligen?

”Det finnes mange bra band i alle mulige metal sjangre i Norge, men det er som du sier, black metal har fått mest oppmerksomhet. Det at vi spiller metal uten sminke er ofte en stor overraskelse på fans i øst-Europa ☺”

På tal om er turné, jag hittar inga spelningar i Sverige! Själv tycker jag (jag är i och för sig halv-norsk!) att det bara är roligt att hitta band från våra grannländer! Framför allt när det är så pass bra hårdrock som ni gör!

Hur kommer det sig att norsk rock och norsk “vanlig heavy metal” inte hittar till Sverige tror du?

Ingen anelse! Kanskje fordi det finnes så mange bra svenske metal band at dere ikke trenger noen norske, haha! Vi har for så vidt Dimmu Borgir, Turbonegro og TNT, men ikke i nærheten av hva dere svensker produserer! You rock!”

Hur ser era planer ut för 2016?

”Ny plate forhåpentligvis, og ny turne. Så får vi se om det blir slik da, hehe.”

Hur är det, är det bassisten eller är det trummisen som är clownen i bandet?

”I Guardians of Time har vi 5 klovner!”

Vad tycker ni om metal-scenen i Europa idag? Hur mår den?

”Metal vil nok aldri bli så stort som det var på 80-tallet, men det finnes metal fans over alt og så lenge det finnes metal fans så finnes det metal! Metal scenen er alive and kickin’!”

Vad spelar du för musik när du sitter själv i bilen?

”Akurrat nå er det Black Sabbath det går i!”

Jag måste ju ändå ta upp lite av det här arvet som finns i Norge med black-metal. Är det något som ni lyssnar på? Är det all metal som finns i Norge (undantaget Guardians of Time och Pagans mind förstås)?

”Alle metal heads i Norge har et forhold til black metal, og de fleste er fan av musikken i ulik grad. Selv liker jeg Immortal, Satyricon og Dimmu Borgir. Men det finnes mye annet bra! Green Carnation, In the Woods, Gothminister, Sirenia, Circus Maximus, Susperia og mange flere.”

Hur ser ni på metal-scenen i Sverige?

”Sverige har etter min mening kanskje verdens beste metal scene! Utrolig mange bra band!”

Du säger att det finns många bra norska metal-band i olika gengres. Förutom Guardians of Time, vilka andra norska band lyssnar ni själva på?

”TNT, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Kvelertak”

Eftersom det är så få “vanliga” norska metal-band som kommer till Sverige och spelar, har ni inte funderat på att försöka slå ihop er med några andra norska band och göra typ en mini-turné i Sverige (och övriga Skandinavien kanske)?

 Jo, det hadde vært kick ass! Et gig på Sweden Rock Festival er jo en våt drøm!

Så det finns planer för en ny platta och ny turné redan 2016!? Det är snabbt jobbat! Har ni påbörjat arbetet med en ny platta? Och hur går det, hur långt har ni kommit?

”Har et par låter klare…” ☺

Vilka är det som skriver era låtar? Vad hittar ni inspirationen ifrån?

”Mer eller mindre alle i bandet bidrar med riff og temaer men melodiene i låtene er det stort sett Bernt som bidrar med. Tekst er det og Bernt som skriver.”

Jag intervjuade gruppen Sator nyligen (håller på och sammanställer den intervjun just nu så den finns inte att läsa än), och han påstod att det finns inga rockgrupper i Sverige som kan leva enbart på sin egen musik. Hur ser det ur för er? Kan ni vara musiker på heltid?

”Nei. Men panter vi flasker kommer vi oss greit igjennom ;-)”

Som jag skrev tidigare, jag har bara hunnit lyssna på er senaste platta “Rage and Fire”. När jag ska fortsätta lyssna på er, vilken platta ska jag fortsätta med då, för att kunna få den bästa uppfattningen av hur Guardians of Time låter? Och säg inte “ALLA”! 🙂

”Når du har hørt deg lei på “Rage and Fire” (som er umulig å gå lei av!), så bør du sjekke ut “Machines of Mental Design”. Og etter det…ALLE!” 🙂

Du skriver att att ni får så stort stöd när ni åker ner och spelar i öst-europa. Hur ser det ut när ni spelar på andra ställen? Jag vet att det kan vara svårt att få igång t.ex. svenska fans när olika band spelar. Vad beror det på? Är det bara kulturellt, eller är vi nordbor mera bortskämda med bra band som spelar hos oss tror du?

”Jeg tror nok Svenske og Norske metal band generelt sett holder et høyt nivå i forhold til de fleste andre land. Når det gjelder å skape liv i publikum, så er det bare å gi 100% hele tiden! Publikum merker energien og det smitter over på dem. Nå har jeg aldri spilt i Sverige, men vi nordmenn er litt tilbakeholdne av natur og trenger nok mer oppvarming enn folk i mange andre land.

I øst europa er metal fans veldig dedikerte, går på konserter, kjøper merchandise og støtter opp om bandene som spiller. Iallefall vi i Norge har nok litt å lære der. Og så drikker de mye rakija der nede…livsfarlig!!!”
